Wi-Fi chipmakers will switch to new standards as soon as possible

Market research organization ABI Research predicts that the IEEE 802.11ac standard will become the mainstream Wi-Fi standard in 2014 after experiencing significant growth in shipments in 2012 and shipments in 2013; only a part of 802.11ac niche sub-devices ( niche subset) will be single-band 802.11ac using only the 5GHz band, and most will be chipsets that support 802.11n / 802.11ac dual-band.

ABI Research believes that Wi-Fi chip suppliers, including Broadcom, Intel, Qualcomm Atheros, TI, etc., will try to consolidate or expand the market by transferring to the new standard as soon as possible; especially for smaller players It will try to expand its own market share with the strategy of rapidly launching a chipset that combines competitive communication standards, frequency bands and MIMO during the transition period.

Although 802.11ad products will debut due to the joint promotion of Qualcomm Atheros and Wilocity, ABI Research expects that the standard will hardly reach 50% market share before 2016. 802.11ad will be used in dual-band or tri-band chipsets; and because of the lower cost, it is expected that the 1x1 802.11n and 802.11ac chipsets will remain mainstream until 2015, and then will be surpassed by 2x2 and 3x3 chipsets.

"With a few exceptions, 802.11g chips are gradually declining, everything has been converted to the 802.11n standard, and progress is faster than most people expect; this also clearly shows the development model that the 802.11ac standard will also experience. "ABI Research analyst Philip Solis said:" 1x1 version of 802.11n replaces 802.11g, 802.11ac will progress faster, and there will be no complex political factors that have dragged on the 802.11n standardization process in the past.
