          3D TV: China's strong development in Western Europe declining in North America

          According to Quarterly TV Design and Features Report, the latest quarterly NPD DisplaySearch report, Western Europe and China are the most dynamic areas for 3D TVs; in North America, 3D TV shipments have declined in the third quarter of 2011.

          a€?We were surprised to see that the popularity of 3D TVs in the Chinese market was much higher than in North America, especially in the third quarter, where the market penetration of 3D TVs in China was more than twice as high as in North America.a€? Paul Gray, director of TV research at NPD DisplaySearch, said, "And 3D TV penetration in North America and Japan is also lower than in the Middle East."

          North American consumers prefer large-size, cost-effective TVs; while Chinese consumers are more willing to purchase new features such as 3D, LED backlighting, and smart TVs.

          The report also analyzes the growth of smart TVs in various regions and finds that in some emerging markets, consumers use 3G wireless networks to skip broadband. In Saudi Arabia, Poland, the Philippines, and Indonesia, 3G subscribers are 10-15 times the number of broadband subscribers. These consumers still want to watch online video on TV, but they are very different from consumers in developed countries who directly connect televisions to broadband.

          In digital broadcasting, the application of emerging technologies is proceeding in tandem. Not only did the introduction of digital terrestrial broadcasting in developed markets halted the transmission of analog signals, but Europe, the Middle East and Asia were also introducing the second-generation digital television standard (DVB-T2).

          The report pointed out that many key countries have already introduced or promised to introduce DVB-T2. It is estimated that by 2015, DVB-T2 terrestrial digital TV shipments will increase from 3.4 million units in 2011 to 64.7 million units.

          "By 2015, shipments of DVB-T and DVB-T2 TVs will be at a fairly high level," Gray continued. "The decision of the Russian and Indian governments to shift to T2 has inflicted strength on the industry and will drive down costs and promote new ones. A round of television applications."

          At the same time, emerging digital transmission technologies have a high degree of maturity whether they are used in mature markets such as the UK or Sweden, or in developing regions such as Nigeria and Kenya.
